Philips Serwouters created this print of a King and Grand Duke on horseback. Two arches, separated by a pillar, frame the two portraits which are rendered in sharp monochromatic lines. These formal devices work to underscore the grandeur of the two figures. Each rider and steed is richly ornamented. Notice the contrast between the crisp lines of the figures and the softer, more painterly landscape in the background. This juxtaposition creates a tension, drawing our eye to the symbols of power represented in the foreground. The lines of the architecture both separate and unite the two figures. It suggests a connection, hinting at shared values and interests. It also underscores the print’s dialogue with the language of power through composition. This work uses a complex visual system to explore themes of authority and representation, inviting an ongoing interpretation of its historical and cultural context.
