modernism
This letter was written in Amsterdam on the 18th of June, 1917. It looks like a stream of consciousness dashed off by someone with a lot on their mind. I can imagine the author of this letter, gripping a fountain pen, the ink flowing as they wrestle with language. I can feel the pull and push as each word leaves the tip and lands on the page, creating an emotional dance between the author and their intended recipient. Look at the way the handwriting loops and leans! These gestures communicate feeling, intention, and meaning. The artist has made marks, and in making those marks, they've made something else. It's exciting to think about artists in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another's creativity. And that's what we're all doing here, right?
