Ernst Ludwig Kirchner gave us ‘Wildboden Mit Kirchners Haus’ with a riot of brushstrokes in blues and greens. Imagine Kirchner standing before this scene, the Swiss landscape alive before him. You can feel the quick, sure movements of his hand, laying down these colors with an energy that borders on frenzy. Look how the paint is thin, almost watercolor-like, allowing the surface beneath to peek through. I’m particularly drawn to how the river cuts through the landscape, a bold blue slash that anchors the composition. It's a dynamic gesture that speaks to a world in motion. Kirchner, like many of us painters, was in constant dialogue with his contemporaries, like the Fauves, taking cues, pushing back, and finding his own voice in the symphony of mark-making. Ultimately, painting is that embodied expression of life, of constant exchange and reinvention.
