This is "Heilwens van de Amsterdamse opkorters", made in 1849 by an anonymous artist. This print wishes health to the people of Amsterdam. Created during a period of significant social and economic change, it provides a window into the lives of ordinary citizens. The image captures a street scene, illustrating everyday life and labor. The figures are portrayed engaged in common activities. But it's the text that really speaks to the cultural context. The print references the fear of cholera, a disease that disproportionately affected the poor and working class. This reveals anxieties about public health and social inequalities. It wishes that even if there is no feast, there is still joy in the house, and even if illness diminishes strength, may joy not be prevented by fear. The anonymous artist reflects the collective hopes and fears of a community grappling with disease and hardship, while yearning for prosperity.
