Strelka 2015

Andrey Remnev created this oil on canvas, "Strelka," employing the traditional, exacting techniques of classical painting. But there is nothing classical about the scene. Remnev has used oil paint in a way that emphasizes the qualities of surface and texture. Note how the matte finish and thin, even application give the painting a unique luminosity, almost like fresco. The repetitive patterns on the figures' gowns are carefully rendered; each brushstroke contributes to the overall effect of richness and depth. It takes time, practice and skilled labor to achieve. Remnev is clearly in command of his medium, but he is not simply showing off his virtuosity.
