Alex Colville made this painting called, Four Figures on Wharf, using a very restrained palette of blues, creams, and whites. I find myself drawn to how the creamy figures stand so starkly against the blue of the water and sky, it's all about the interplay of light and form. The surface has this incredible smoothness, which must have been achieved through very thin layers of paint meticulously applied; this gives it a strange dreamy quality. I keep coming back to the figure second from the left, the way the soft drapery clings to the body. It's almost like a classical sculpture, but rendered with a modern sensibility. There's an incredible sense of stillness, of quiet contemplation that permeates the whole scene. Colville reminds me a little of Edward Hopper, but without the harshness. His approach invites us to slow down, to meditate on the subtle nuances of light, form, and color. He reminds us that art isn’t about grand gestures, but about the quiet power of observation.
