This print, made by Christoffel van Sichem II, depicts Moses and the Israelites singing a song of thanks. The image has been realized through woodcut, a relief printing process. The artist carves away the areas that will not receive ink, leaving the design raised on the block's surface. The stark contrast of light and shadow is a testament to the artist’s skill. Look closely at the textures that Sichem has created: the rough bark of the tree, the flowing garments of the figures, and the dense clouds above. The very act of cutting the wood gives the print its distinctive character: lines are bold and angular, defining forms with precision. Woodcut was a key technology for disseminating images and texts, making them accessible to a broad audience. In this work, Sichem not only tells a biblical story, but also demonstrates the power of printmaking as a medium for communication and cultural exchange. He draws our attention to the essential role of craft in shaping our understanding of history.
