Joannes van Doetechum I created this print of a fountain in a square sometime in the late 16th century. It offers us a glimpse into the cultural values of the Dutch Golden Age, where civic pride and humanist ideals flourished. The image presents an idealized public space centered around an elaborate fountain reminiscent of classical temples. It speaks to the period’s fascination with classical antiquity and its architectural principles and refers to an elite, educated audience familiar with these references. This aesthetic emerges in the context of the Eighty Years' War, when the Dutch Republic was asserting its independence from Spanish rule, so the construction of elaborate public works can be understood as acts of defiance and symbolic assertions of a new, independent national identity. By studying city plans, guild records, and other visual representations of the time, we can better understand the social and political functions of public spaces in the Dutch Republic. Art history is about reconstructing the world in which the artwork was created.
