Editor: This photograph, entitled "[Tracks by water in Lübeck]" attributed to Laurence Feininger, gives off a rather eerie vibe because of the contrasted light and shadow. What do you see in this piece? Curator: The tracks are central, aren't they? Notice how they lead us into the image, connecting the industrial foreground with the more distant, perhaps historical, skyline of Lübeck. Those tracks represent journeys, commerce, the movement of people and goods. Where do you think they lead, beyond the frame? Editor: I guess towards progress, or maybe just the unknown. It feels like a departure point. Curator: Indeed. Departure but also, importantly, a return. This push and pull between known and unknown are at play here, as the tracks themselves become a symbol of the human drive to connect. Editor: I didn't see that before, but I see what you mean now, thanks! Curator: My pleasure.
