This tobacco box with a cover was made in Vienna. While its date is unknown, we can appreciate the box as an artifact from a time when tobacco use was entwined with social rituals, particularly amongst men of status. Tobacco, as a commodity, played a significant role in transatlantic trade and colonialism, often fueled by exploited labor and land. While it is easy to focus on the delicate painting of the bird and the flowers, the reality is that this box, while seemingly innocent, connects us to a complex global history of power and exploitation. Reflecting on this box invites us to consider how everyday objects carry stories far beyond their immediate function. It asks us to acknowledge the intricate ties between personal pleasure and global histories of inequality.
