Mariam Aslamazian's "Portrait of Different Years" is a real painterly experience, made with oil on canvas. Look at the way the faces emerge from the ground! It feels like the painting has come into being through many layers, shifting and resolving gradually through the artist's intuition. I can almost feel Aslamazian’s presence. What was it like to be her, brush in hand, coaxing these figures onto the canvas? The paint is applied with confident strokes, not too thick, but generous. The colors are so evocative. The composition makes me think about how different forms of painting offer ways of seeing and experiencing the world. Notice the woman on the right, her gaze intense, framed by a patterned headscarf and chunky necklace. I see Aslamazian in the lineage of painters who aren't afraid to mix representation with something deeper, something felt. Artists inspire each other across time, creating an ongoing dialogue of ideas. Aslamazian's work reminds us that painting is a form of embodied expression, where ambiguity and uncertainty open the door to multiple meanings.
