Curator: Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger painted this intriguing “Portrait of a Man in Classical Dress, possibly Philip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke.” Editor: Wow, there's a haunting vulnerability there, wouldn't you say? That intense gaze offset by the flamboyant drapery… like he's both exposed and armored. Curator: The portrait, housed here at Tate Britain, invites us to consider the complex performance of masculinity in the Jacobean era. The sitter's garments evoke a sense of Roman nobility, while his expression hints at inner turmoil. Editor: It's that red, too. It shouts power but also hints at fragility – like dried blood, or a sunset. Curator: Indeed. Gheeraerts, through his strategic use of symbolism and composition, engages with contemporary notions of power, identity, and representation. It prompts us to ask: how do individuals navigate the pressures of societal expectations and personal desires? Editor: Makes me think about how we all construct ourselves, even now. The clothes, the roles we play... beneath it all, there's always that raw, human core. Curator: Precisely. This portrait serves as a timeless reminder of the enduring human drama that unfolds within the confines of history. Editor: Yes. A little window into a soul, dressed in red.

Philip Herbert was a wealthy aristocrat who boosted his income from large land holdings in England with colonial trading interests. In 1612 he became a member of the council of the Virginia Company, which colonised the east coast of North America. He was also a founder of the Northwest Passage Company, and of the Guiana [Guyana] Company. Herbert was a member of the East India Company from 1614 and probably had commercial interests in the Caribbean. Gallery label, July 2024
