Jian Guzhai created this ‘secret cove’ using ink on paper. The miniature landscape is a complex and delicate interplay of line and form. I am trying to imagine the artist making this. Did he plan it? Did he just start drawing and see where it went? A building emerges, then trees, then water and so on. The artist seems to delight in the sinuous lines, which wind and curl across the surface, creating a sense of depth and movement. The entire scene seems to be in motion, a kind of dreamscape that invites us to wander and explore. The level of detail is astounding, especially given the size of the work. This piece is like a conversation, not only with the depicted landscape, but also with a history of mark-making. Ultimately, painting is about exchange, about inspiring one another. It’s an embodied expression, it embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
