Curatorial notes
Albert Greiner captured this photograph of the Weesperpoort Station in Amsterdam, adorned for the arrival of Willem III and Emma. Above the doorway, the arrangement of flowers and foliage is particularly striking. The tall, pointed leaves evoke images of triumph, akin to ancient Roman standards. We have seen similar motifs in triumphal arches throughout history, a way to herald the arrival of dignitaries and associate them with glory and success. The use of floral arrangements is no accident. Flowers are the language of emotion; they represent ideas of growth, prosperity, and welcome. This decorative strategy is an old one, and it speaks to our deeply rooted need to celebrate and honor figures of power. This echoes through time, resurfacing in various forms and contexts, yet always carrying a similar emotional charge.
