Editor: This is an untitled etching by Per Kirkeby. The stark, black lines against the white paper create a sense of fragmented solidity. How do you interpret the relationship between line and form in this print? Curator: The artist deploys line to construct a visual architecture. Note how the linear structure avoids closure, resulting in forms that suggest mass without defining it absolutely. Does this open structure evoke something for you? Editor: I suppose it creates a feeling of incompleteness, like a sketch rather than a finished piece. Curator: Precisely. Kirkeby uses the intrinsic qualities of the etching process to propose form, but leaves the resolution to the viewer’s perception. Editor: Thank you, I now better grasp Kirkeby's approach.
