Niels Larsen Stevns made this study of an eagle, at an unknown date, with a pencil. It’s just lines on paper, right? But those lines, they dance and dive, trying to capture something wild. It’s as if he’s thinking on the page, the pencil moving as fast as his thoughts. I love that you can see the process so clearly. The smudges, the light and dark, the way the lines create a sense of movement. Look at how the artist renders the head and beak with so many rapid marks. Are they unresolved or full of possibility? It reminds me of Cy Twombly's scribbles, that same sense of energy and trying to catch something fleeting. This study feels like a secret, a glimpse into the artist's mind. It’s not about perfection or finish; it's about the raw, messy, and beautiful act of seeing. And, for me, that’s what art is all about.
