This 16th-century bronze medal, created by an anonymous artist, depicts the mythological scene of Perseus rescuing Andromeda from the sea monster Cetus. Perseus, a Greek hero, is shown flying through the air with his sword raised, while Andromeda, chained to a rock, looks on. The sea monster is depicted emerging from the waves, its jaws open in a menacing gesture. The circular shape and high relief of the medal are characteristic of the Renaissance, which saw a revival of interest in classical art and mythology. The inscription around the edge of the medal, “Mvxante,” is likely the name of the maker.
