Dimensions overall: 44.5 x 36.7 cm (17 1/2 x 14 7/16 in.)

Arelia Arbo made this dress study out of watercolor and graphite on paper, and it’s interesting to think of the quiet concentration required for such an intricate image. The artist is so precise, mapping out the dress’s anatomy with such attentiveness. What was she thinking as she worked? Did she imagine the dress in motion, twirling at a dance, or was she simply captivated by its form and structure? I wonder if she imagined making the dress? Notice the delicate touches of color – those tiny pink and green flowerets scattered across the fabric, the soft blush of the ribbons on the sleeves. Each mark feels deliberate, a testament to Arbo’s dedication. It makes me think about the relationship between art and craft, the way a simple sketch can become a window into another world, another time.
