Jan Matulka made this drawing of a seated male nude in graphite on paper. It's a study in form, where the marks are not just descriptive but actively shaping the figure. Look at how the lines vary in thickness and direction, creating a sense of volume and shadow. It feels like Matulka is thinking through the process of drawing, figuring out the body's structure with each stroke. The hatching behind the figure isn't just a background, it presses the figure forward, a bit claustrophobic. The texture is all in the graphite; the paper smooth beneath it. Notice the hand resting on the figure's face – it's both delicate and strong, the lines defining the fingers almost like a map. It reminds me a little of Picasso's cubist-influenced drawings, where the body is broken down and reassembled, pushing us to see in new ways. What do you think?
