Editor: This small, undated pen and ink drawing from the British School depicts a strange little procession. They look like inflated caricatures, but of whom? What do you see in this, beyond the obvious satire? Curator: Ah, satire, yes, but also something delightfully absurd! Their exaggerated forms waddle forward with a kind of determined foolishness. Perhaps it’s a reflection on the pompousness of authority, or just the artist’s wild imagination running amok. What do you think gives them their peculiar energy? Editor: I think the cross-hatching gives them real volume, despite the small scale. I hadn't thought about it as imagination running wild. Curator: Precisely! It’s that tension between the sharp lines and the rounded bellies that makes them so memorable, isn't it? It leaves you wondering who they are, and what they could be after. Editor: Absolutely. Now I’m seeing them in a new light.
