"Two Studies of a Woman Sitting in a Landscape" is a pencil drawing by Matthijs Maris, created sometime between 1874 and 1875. The artwork, housed in the Rijksmuseum, features two sketches of a seated woman in a landscape. The top study is more abstract, with loose, expressive lines capturing the figure's form and surrounding atmosphere. The lower sketch is more defined, depicting the woman in a more naturalistic setting with a greater emphasis on detail. These preliminary sketches demonstrate Maris's exploration of form and composition, offering a glimpse into the artist's creative process.
Comments
In Paris Maris did not make fully worked-up studies, instead he sketched figures and tried out compositions, as can be seen here. In the top part of this sheet a girl tending goats can be discerned twice amidst the jumble of lines. In the bottom half Maris drew a composition sketch for the painting Girl with Goats, also on view in this gallery.
