This roundel depicting Susanna in Judgement was created, we think, in the 16th century, likely after designs by the Master of the Joseph Panels. It’s made of glass, of course, with the image rendered in vitreous enamel. Unlike painting on canvas, here the artist had to build the image from light itself. The glass acts as a filter, allowing colors to emerge as light passes through. Note how the painterly qualities are achieved, through the layering of enamel. This was no quick process. Each layer had to be fired in a kiln to fix it permanently, demanding immense skill and patience. Although this panel tells a biblical story, the clothing and setting are distinctly of its own time. Roundels like this were luxury objects, made for wealthy patrons to display in their homes. They are a testament to the enduring power of craft, transforming humble materials into objects of lasting beauty and meaning. The skill involved elevates this from mere ‘decoration’ to a powerful form of visual storytelling.
