Curatorial notes
Remedios Varo's painting presents us with potent symbols of transformation and societal anxieties. The clinic, adorned with gothic arches, serves as a stage for the drama of the modern pursuit of beauty, as it promises to reshape the human form. Consider the masked figure entering the clinic. Masks have long been used to conceal and transform, appearing in ritualistic practices and theatrical performances across cultures. Here, the mask hints at a deeper, psychological yearning—a desire to alter not just the physical self but perhaps the very essence of one's being. Meanwhile, the mannequin in the window displays the clinic’s promises of a perfected, yet artificial, form, a visual echo of ancient fertility idols, now recast in the cold, modern language of plastic surgery. It is a reflection on our collective, often subconscious, desires to conform, to transcend the limitations of our natural forms. Varo offers us a poignant commentary on the ever-evolving, cyclical pursuit of perfection.
