Philippus Velijn made this etching, "Landscape with figures by a watermill," sometime in the early 19th century. It's a scene that seems quiet at first glance, but when you look closer, you realize the mill is a meeting place of labor, leisure, and transit. Velijn lived during a time of great social change in Europe, the aftershocks of revolution, and the beginnings of industrialization. I'm interested in how the people in this landscape navigate their roles, crossing the bridge on horseback, fishing, and working at the mill. Are they passing through, part of the landscape, or do they live there? The figures in the foreground appear as archetypes, suggesting the universality of labor, but it also runs the risk of romanticizing rural life, obscuring the labor, class, and gender dynamics at play. Still, the way Velijn captured this space invites us to consider our relationship to the land.
