Curatorial notes
Antonio Tempesta made this engraving, titled "Creature with Mane and Hooves," in the Netherlands sometime before 1630. The image depicts a leucrocota, a mythical beast with the hindquarters of a stag, the head of a dog, and a lion's mane. The subject comes from classical and medieval bestiaries, popular books that described real and imaginary animals for moralizing purposes. These books were produced in a specific social context, and they can be seen as reflections of the cultural and religious beliefs of the time. The images served as a form of visual rhetoric, reinforcing social hierarchies and moral values. Tempesta produced this engraving as part of a series illustrating different animals, and the prints were collected into an illustrated book. The power of this image today comes from the way we understand the historical context, which allows us to understand the visual codes and cultural references. By looking at the social conditions and cultural institutions that shaped the creation and reception of bestiaries, we can gain insights into the mindset of the people who created and consumed them.
