This photo was taken anonymously at the Stationsgebouw of the Gemeente Luchthaven Schiphol. It’s kind of perfect that it was taken by an anonymous person – art isn’t always about the ‘who’, but the ‘what’. The high-contrast black and white makes me think about the geometric patterns everywhere you look – the floors, walls, and signage all form a symphony of sharp, interlocking shapes. The people are a little less clearly defined and flow into one another. I love how photography lets you play with focus. The photographer frames the space in a way that really accentuates the graphic sensibility of the interior, giving it an almost surreal quality. It makes me think of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s typologies. They photographed industrial structures, but this is the opposite – an image of people within a commercial interior. It’s a reminder that art-making is always in conversation. Nothing is ever really new, is it?
