Saint George's Chapel-Princess Charlotte's Cenotaph (465) c. 1859
Dimensions 8 Ã 7.5 cm (3 1/8 Ã 2 15/16 in.)
Editor: This is a stereograph by George Washington Wilson, showing the Princess Charlotte's Cenotaph in Saint George's Chapel. It's small, but the sculpted figures seem so imposing. What's your interpretation of this scene? Curator: Well, for me, the double image adds a ghostly dimension to an already mournful sculpture. Wilson captures not just a monument to grief, but the echoing effect of loss itself. Doesn’t it make you wonder about the fleeting nature of memory and fame? Editor: That's a beautiful way to put it. I hadn't considered the stereograph format as adding to that feeling. Curator: Photography has a beautiful way of playing with our perception of time and space, amplifying emotions we don't always see. Editor: Absolutely. I'll definitely look at stereographs differently now.
