Editor: Here we have Barend Groote's photograph, "Aubade op de Dam in Amsterdam, 5 maart 1901, feestelijkheden ter gelegenheid van het huwelijk van koningin Wilhelmina en prins Hendrik." It’s an albumen print, capturing a festive scene. I'm struck by how the photographer captured this massive public event, with so much depth of field. How would you approach interpreting this photograph? Curator: Considering this piece from a formalist perspective, attention must be given to the interplay between light and shadow, and the stark linearity defining the architectural backdrop against the curvature of the gathered crowd. Note also the tonal range of the albumen print itself. It is also critical to assess the function of visual hierarchy; in which order does the photograph encourage the eye to travel? How does this inform its reception? Editor: The figure on the podium is a very striking focal point; how would a Formalist perspective explain that emphasis? Curator: One must consider the geometric organization: the rectangular podium juxtaposed against the organic arrangement of the crowd; the human figure presented atop the orthogonal form in such a way that establishes a pattern between dark and light that pulls the viewer's eye upward and inward. This focus is further emphasized through tonal contrast. One is therefore urged to examine these forms themselves. Editor: That’s really fascinating. I see the photo very differently now. What have you noticed looking at the photo just now? Curator: I appreciate that the composition encourages active participation through these varied shapes. By exploring line, form, light, and composition and bracketing off the noise of historical background, we uncover a dynamic experience, rather than just historical documentation.
