Editor: This photograph by Jack Gould, titled *Untitled (Beaux Arts Ball, people in costume dancing)*, captures a lively scene. I’m struck by the juxtaposition of the whimsical costumes against what seems like a formal interior. What can you tell me about it? Curator: This image, though seemingly lighthearted, speaks volumes about class and privilege. Beaux Arts Balls were often elaborate affairs, a space for the elite to perform identities through costume, often borrowing from or appropriating other cultures. Who had access to these spaces, and whose cultures were being put on display? Editor: That's a good point. So, it’s not just a fun party, it's a reflection of social power dynamics? Curator: Exactly. We should ask ourselves, what does it mean to "dress up" as another culture, and who benefits from this performance? It makes me think about the history of orientalism, for example. Editor: That gives me a lot to think about! Thanks for sharing your perspective.
