"Skizzenbuch" is a sketchbook by the German artist Ludwig Metz, created between 1860 and 1861. Now housed at the Städel Museum, the artwork is a simple brown leather-bound sketchbook. Its worn exterior and frayed binding convey the artist's use, hinting at the countless drawings and ideas contained within. This sketchbook exemplifies the importance of preparatory works in an artist's creative process, offering insight into the artist's creative journey and the evolution of their ideas.
Comments
In this sketchbook, dated 1869, Ludwig Metz drew only a few landscape and architectural motifs, probably during a trip to Greece. Especially the ruins of ancient temples and the Acropolis of Athens seem to have attracted him there, since he studied them from different vantage points. The drawing of two cuboids, executed in brown crayon at the beginning of the book, is the only motif that stands out.For a full sketchbook description, please see “Research”.
