Eugen von Blaas, an artist of the 19th and early 20th centuries, painted this scene of everyday life with watercolors. It’s a glimpse into the prevailing attitudes of the time. Von Blaas often depicted women in idealized and romanticized ways, reflecting the patriarchal society which informed his worldview. Notice how the women are positioned, either engaged in conversation or caught in transit, each carrying the burdens of their daily lives. There is one man amongst the group; a figure in repose on a bench. These intimate scenes also hint at the social restrictions placed upon women, limited to certain roles and spaces.
