Curatorial notes

This is a page from Bernhard Jobin's New Künstlichs Modelbuch, a book of model patterns, printed sometime in the late 16th century. The overall visual impression is one of controlled ornamental density, the black ink forming a stark contrast against the off-white of the page. A decorative border composed of repeating geometric and organic motifs frames two blocks of German text. This structure creates a visual hierarchy, drawing our eye towards the script enclosed. The text itself functions as a series of semiotic signs, its content reflecting cultural attitudes towards women. But the border is particularly interesting; its design is a fascinating interplay between form and function. Each unit, repeated and interconnected, contributes to a larger pattern that contains the writing. The visual language of ornamentation becomes a metaphor for the social constraints and expectations placed upon women. The dialectic between text and image creates a space for interpreting the cultural codes embedded within the artwork.
