Editor: This is Willem Jacobszoon Delff’s portrait of George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham. All those pearls! It really speaks to the Duke’s wealth. What can you tell me about it? Curator: I see a meticulous display of wealth, yes, but also the labour and resources required to produce such finery. Think of the pearl divers, the lace makers, and the tailors involved. How does their labor shape our understanding of the Duke’s status? Editor: It certainly makes it seem less… effortless. Curator: Precisely. And considering Delff’s process as a printmaker, how does the medium itself democratize or complicate notions of aristocratic portraiture and power? Editor: I hadn’t considered that. It makes me think about how access to art has changed over time. Thanks for the perspective.
