This print, ‘Figures by a gateway with a list of tariffs’ was made by Isaac Weissenbruch in the Netherlands. Though undated, Weissenbruch was working in a period when the rigid class structures of the 19th century shaped every aspect of social life. Here, at the entrance to what seems to be a park or estate, we see figures from different social strata. A woman, perhaps a servant, walks with a child, while a man rides through the gate on horseback. The posted tariffs remind us of the economic barriers that governed access to leisure and privilege. Weissenbruch, deeply involved in the social and artistic currents of his time, uses his art to hint at these subtle power dynamics. It invites us to consider how landscapes are not just passive backdrops but spaces imbued with social meaning. It encourages us to look closely at the silent stories they tell about who is welcome and who is not.
