Jan van Londerseel created this print titled "Landschap met Abraham die de drie engelen smeekt Sodom te sparen" sometime in the late 16th or early 17th century. During this period in the Netherlands, there was a burgeoning interest in landscape art, which often carried deeper moral or religious messages. Here, Londerseel visualizes a scene from the Bible, blending it into a detailed landscape. Abraham is shown pleading with the three angels to spare Sodom, a city condemned for its sins. It’s interesting to consider the role of faith and justice during this time of religious conflict, especially the Protestant Reformation. The print invites us to contemplate the interplay between divine judgment and human mercy. Van Londerseel’s work captures not only a biblical narrative, but also reflects the ethical and spiritual concerns of his time.
