This satirical print by Johan Michaël Schmidt Crans, made in 1868, presents us with a birdcatcher as a symbol of religious conflict. Here, we observe a figure luring birds towards a trap. Birds, universally representing freedom and spirituality, are here being lured towards a sign that reads "BROEDERLIJK WOORD AAN DE SYNODALE EN NIET SYNODALE PROTESTANTEN," which translates to "Fraternal word to the synodal and non-synodal Protestants." The act of capturing birds becomes a potent metaphor for the attempt to ensnare and manipulate religious factions. Across centuries, birds in flight have symbolized the ethereal connection between the earthly and divine. Yet, in Crans' portrayal, this symbol is subverted. It transforms into a representation of vulnerability and the loss of spiritual autonomy, reflecting the artist’s anxieties about religious dogma. This resonates with our own collective memory, prompting a deep, subconscious unease about manipulation. The recurring tension between freedom and control continues to resurface.
