This is Antonio Tempesta's 'Balkende ezel', made with etching. Its modest dimensions belie the dynamic energy captured within its lines. The image is dominated by the figure of a braying donkey, caught mid-action. Tempesta masterfully uses line to convey both form and texture. Notice how the density of the etched lines defines the muscular contours of the animal, while also suggesting its coarse hair. The composition, though simple, is effective. The donkey occupies most of the frame, its diagonal posture creating a sense of movement and instability. The stark contrast between light and shadow adds to the drama, highlighting the animal's expressive features. Tempesta seems to be playing with the idea of representation itself, using a relatively simple medium to create a vivid and dynamic image. This play with form and expression invites us to reflect on the nature of representation.
