Study of a Seated Man with a Dog 1880 - 1900

Ladislav Mednyánszky painted this oil study of a seated man with a dog, sometime in the late 19th, early 20th century. It's a seemingly simple portrayal of bourgeois life in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. But, we can also understand this image in terms of institutional history. This man, in his riding boots, suit, and hat, might be a member of the landed gentry, whose power was preserved by an imperial structure, which Mednyánszky critiques in his more socially-conscious works.
