Jules Destrée wrote this letter to Philip Zilcken with a pen, we don't know exactly when. Look at that eagle at the top, it almost looks like an annotation in a sketchbook! I love how the letters dance across the page, each stroke carrying its own weight, its own little journey. The artist's hand guides the ink, but the ink also has a say. Like paint bleeding into the canvas, the ink spreads and settles, creating texture, depth, and a sense of time passing. Destrée is trying to figure out whether to send a painting with or without its frame. I've been there! He writes about the risks of sending it in a double frame, which would require special packaging. You can feel the concern of getting it safely to its destination. All these painters, all these letters, they're all part of this big, messy conversation, passing ideas back and forth, inspiring each other to make something new.
