Ernst Fuchs made this drawing, 'Gunter', in 1945, and you can see how he coaxes form out of simple hatched lines, like pulling a rabbit out of a hat. It's a process, an unveiling. Look at the hair, how Fuchs uses these energetic, almost scribbled lines to create volume and movement. There's a real sense of improvisation, as if he's thinking through the form right there on the page. The face is more modeled, with delicate shading. The eyes are quite intense. The whole image shimmers with a kind of restless energy. Maybe he had Picasso in mind? All the best art feels like a conversation, a constant reinterpretation and reinvention. It's a reminder that art isn't about answers, but about the questions we keep asking.
