Abraham Manievich made this painting, Autumn in the Park, with oils and a whole lotta looking. The whole thing feels like it's about to topple over with the weight of all that orange! You can see how he's used these mosaic-like brushstrokes to build up the canopy, so that the leaves become almost like stained glass. I can imagine him working outdoors, trying to capture the light as it flickers through the branches. And each touch of the brush is almost like a note in a musical score, composing the scene. Look at how he paints the tree trunks, with these long dark strokes. They anchor the whole composition, but they also create this sense of depth, pulling you into the painting. It's like he's saying, come on in, the water's warm! Painting is always this conversation across time, you know? Manievich learned from the cubists, and they learned from Cezanne. It's all just one big feedback loop, with artists riffing off each other, trying to make sense of the world in their own way.
