Abraham Manievich painted this Autumn scene with what looks like oil on canvas, sometime in the early 20th century. The palette is a tapestry of reds and oranges, woven with strokes that both define and dissolve the forms, it feels like a real push-pull. The black outlines give the painting a stained-glass effect, each pane a facet of light and color. Look at how the brushstrokes in the canopy echo each other, each a little flame of autumnal color. There’s a tension between representation and abstraction, Manievich captures the essence of a season, the sensation of being surrounded by the vibrant decay of autumn. It makes me think of other artists who were playing with similar ideas, like Klimt, especially those landscapes he made later on. But Manievich has his own thing going on here, I feel it. It's less about symbolism, more about that visual rush you get when fall really gets going.
