This is Robert Frank’s photo contact sheet, *Guggenheim 746/Americans 82--Indianapolis*, made with a camera, film, and darkroom. It's a document of Frank’s photographic process. What was it like to be Frank at this moment? Squinting through the viewfinder, chasing light and shadow, trying to capture something fleeting about America? I imagine him walking down the street, a little bit of an outsider, trying to see the heart of this country. Each frame is like a little painting, full of mood. The high contrast, the way the light flares, gives these images a raw, almost desperate feeling. The red marks on the image – like a painter’s underdrawing – point to Frank's editing process. I feel him making choices, honing in on the images that speak to him. His work reminds me of other photographers like Walker Evans, who were also trying to document America in a straightforward way. But there's something more personal and poetic in Frank’s work. It's a dialogue across time, a shared exploration of what it means to see and feel.
