This bronze medal, now held in the Rijksmuseum, presents a dual-sided narrative in miniature. Each face offers a distinct visual field, bound by the circular form, yet diverging in symbolic weight. The obverse features a profile portrait, meticulously detailed with flowing hair and regal attire, framed by an inscription along the edge. On the reverse, a more complex scene unfolds, possibly depicting an event related to the Prince of Orange’s elevation. Buildings and figures are rendered with a linear precision, creating a tableau that invites closer examination. The circular format and relief carving create an interplay between flatness and depth, challenging our perception and creating new meaning.
