Curatorial notes
This is a promotional trade card for Sweet Caporal Cigarettes, produced by the Kinney Tobacco Company in the late 19th century. It depicts a uniformed officer of the 1st Regiment, Rhode Island Militia. These cards were immensely popular, reflecting the increasing commercialization and advertising of the time. They also reveal a romanticized vision of military service. Note the figure’s carefully styled hair, suggesting an idealized, rather than realistic, depiction of a soldier. The bright colors and crisp lines, typical of mass-produced commercial art, present a heroic image divorced from the grim realities of warfare. Consider what this image leaves out: the diverse experiences of soldiers, the horrors of combat, and the complex politics of military conflict. This trade card participates in constructing a particular kind of masculine identity, one linked to notions of duty and honor, while it simultaneously functions as marketing material.
