Alfred Stieglitz made this photograph of The Jungfrau Group with gelatin silver. There's a real range of tones at play here, like a symphony of grays. What I find striking is how Stieglitz isn’t just showing us a mountain, but an emotional landscape. It's a conversation between light and shadow. Look at the textures, especially how the light catches the crags of the rock face on the right. There's a real physicality to it, almost like you could reach out and touch it. Then, your eye travels up to the soft, ethereal clouds. The contrast is amazing! Stieglitz makes me think of the painter Georgia O'Keefe, his wife. Both artists were interested in zooming in and abstracting the world around them. Art, like life, is a process of constant exploration, where meaning is never fixed, but always evolving.
