Notice how the female figure raises her spear, not just in defense, but almost as a challenge? I wonder, what cultural memories does the artist, Franz von Stuck, invoke in presenting this Amazon? The amount of labour poured into the molding, the investment of bronze... were public works such as this an effort to create stability in society, through employment opportunities in Germany? However, it's also a potent symbol. Amazons, throughout history, represent female strength, independence, and sometimes even disruption of patriarchal norms. Considering von Stuck's Symbolist leanings, could the statue embody a rising challenge to traditional societal structures or ideals through potent historical and allegorical references? Curator: Well, even those references needed workshops and labor, let's not forget it took hours of people's time, that somebody was paid, or not, to create this sculpture that depicts Amazon. We need to examine labour. What sort of tensions are created with this convergence of images?
