This engraving, 'Job op de mesthoop bezocht door zijn vrienden' was created by Johannes de Mare. The composition is strikingly divided, both horizontally and vertically, creating a tableau of suffering and observation. The lower half, dominated by dark, textured lines, depicts Job in distress. This contrasts sharply with the smoother, more controlled lines used to render his friends in the upper portion of the print. De Mare employs a semiotic strategy of visual coding; the rough texture and somber tones associated with Job and his immediate surroundings signify degradation and anguish. The friends, rendered with greater clarity and detail, are literally and figuratively distanced from Job's suffering. The formal arrangement, therefore, doesn't just depict a biblical scene. It also comments on the nature of human relationships in times of crisis, presenting a world where suffering is isolated and observed rather than shared. The stark contrast between Job and his friends challenges conventional notions of empathy, inviting viewers to question the very structure of their emotional engagement.
