This photograph entitled 'Joegoslavië, april 1943', was taken anonymously, in what was then known as Yugoslavia. In the absence of a known author we can only guess at what it was like to live through the act of witnessing this moment in history, captured on film. The composition contains a trio of images, each offering glimpses into daily life and community. The surface of the photograph appears to be carefully composed, with each image positioned intentionally, encouraging us to consider the relationship between them. The first image depicts a woman hanging washing on a clothesline, the second portrays a group of women washing together, and the third captures a girl looking directly at the camera. There is such care in her gaze, you can feel a range of emotions conveyed in her expression. By observing these visual elements, we can begin to decipher and connect with the world in which the anonymous photographer lived, felt, and created.
