François Schillemans' "The Synod of Dordrecht" (1618-1619) is a detailed depiction of the Protestant Synod of Dort, a significant event in the history of the Dutch Reformed Church. This engraving, housed in the Rijksmuseum, offers a visual record of the assembly, showcasing the attendees and their seating arrangements. The scene captures the grandeur of the event, with a focus on the large central table and the rows of figures flanking the hall. This historical artwork provides insights into the theological debates and decisions that shaped Dutch Protestantism during this period.
Comments
This print was commissioned by the States General, the administrative body of the Dutch Republic. It depicts the meeting (synod) of Calvinist ministers that took place in Dordrecht from November 1618 and lasted more than six months. The main aim was to settle the conflict between the Reformed Church and the more liberal Remonstrants. The ecclesiastical, orthodox line prevailed: deviating views were forbidden and Remonstrant ministers were expelled from office.
