Niele Toroni, born in 1937, made this work which he titled, "Imprints of a No. 50 Paintbrush Repeated at Regular Intervals of 30 cm.," using the most basic tools and techniques. Toroni began making these works in 1967, at a moment when the definition of art, and who could make it, was in radical flux. Toroni’s simple gesture challenges traditional notions of artistic skill and authorship. Each mark is deliberately similar, yet subtly unique, reflecting the nuances of human touch. The grid-like structure that emerges prompts us to reflect on repetition, labor, and the systems that govern our lives. What does it mean to repeat a gesture, to mark time in measured increments? Toroni has said, “I am not a painter, I am someone who makes paintings.” Here the artist seems to suggest his role is less about traditional artistry and more about conceptual exploration. Consider the tension between the mechanical regularity and the inevitable imperfections of the human hand. How does this interplay affect your experience of the work?
